17-year-old Luthando (Esihle Ndleleni) is at the top of her class in a prestigious all-girls boarding school in South Africa. All is in order in Luthando’s pristine world until the arrival of an intriguing new girl at school. Luthando is eager to impress Ayanda (Muadi Illung) but struggles to balance what it takes to remain the school’s golden child. Along with her awakened feelings comes an exciting new social life as a cool entourage of girls welcome her in. Between her mother, school, and friends, Luthando’s life is full of expectations to maintain.

Director Sandulela Asanda draws from her own experiences with repressed sexuality at an Anglican all-girls private school and sets forth to prove that there is joy outside of the things that confine us. This beautiful coming-of-age film balances the joys of girlhood with the fear of embracing one’s identity.
