Volunteers are an integral part of Out On Screen, ensuring that the Vancouver Queer Film Festival runs smoothly by working both front of house and behind the scenes.
Our volunteers are film-lovers and champions of 2SLGBTQIA+ education; members of the queer community and our allies; those seeking to gain new skills and those wishing to provide their expertise; folks who want to network and folks who just want to meet some new friends! Our volunteers are people like you—who believe in the power of art and storytelling, and who want to join us in our work to uplift queer lives in our communities.

Technical Customer Support
These volunteers ensure the digital accessibility of our festival for patrons with diverse digital backgrounds! You are a problem solver, love interacting with the public, and are comfortable learning and using technology. You may be using various forms of communication including live chat, e-mail, social media, and phone support. These opportunities include both in-office and remote roles.
Packaging & Distribution
Always wanted to test out being a mail carrier? This is your chance! These volunteers get involved in-person to ensure that all our physical materials get put into the hands of our patrons. Bonus points if you have a driver’s license and vehicle to support deliveries.
Event Support
Event support volunteers help to make sure our parties and special events are successful. You love parties, meeting new people or supporting behind the scenes. Event support includes both remote and in-person opportunities such as monitoring digital events, technical videography support, on-site set up, and supporting performers on-site.
Copy Editing & Platform Testing
These volunteers support the digital accessibility and revision process of our physical guide, website, and other public-facing platforms. You enjoy nitpicking written and digital material, providing constructive feedback, and being the first to test a new product. These opportunities are both remote and hosted in our offices.
James Ong Volunteer Service Award
Established in 2018, the Volunteer Service Award recognizes significant contribution to 2SLGBTQIA+ communities through volunteer service with Out On Screen and its programs, the Vancouver Queer Film Festival and Out In Schools. The award is recognizes the long term voluntary service of James Ong to Out On Screen. James began with Out On Screen in 1999 and continued his service for over nineteen years. Over the years James has occupied many roles in the organization such as Venue Coordinator, Box Office Coordinator, and fifteen years of service on our Board of Directors including as Board Chair for twelve years. We always say that volunteers are at the heart of what we do, so we like to honour one every year as a small token of our appreciation. Recipients are recognized at our Centrepiece Gala each year and a donation is made to Out On Screen in their name.
