Bixa Travesty (Tranny Fag)

Black, transgender singer Linn da Quebrada, born and raised in the favelas of São Paulo, is a force of nature in this documentary that interrogates and joyfully explores the possibilities of the trans-feminine body and art politic. The film follows da Quebrada on a personal and artistic journey as she carves out a space for herself on Brazil’s stages and airwaves, along with fellow trans performer Jup do Bairro, channeling her rage through her music and a biting sense of humour towards the very patriarchy that would kill her. Filmmakers Claudia Priscilla and Kiko Goiffman capture the electricity of da Quabreda’s live performances juxtaposed with tender scenes of Linn’s life at home with her mother and chosen family. Bixa Travesty is an intimate portrait of a complex and evolving performer, whose very body is an act of resistance and whose voice is a megaphone for empowerment.
