A Sexplanation

Like many of us, Alex Liu came of age with a decidedly incomplete sex education. Christian moralism and patriarchal heteronormative values have laid the foundation for abstinence-only based sexual health education to proliferate throughout North American schools, encouraging a culture of silence and shame. After years of repression, Alex makes it his mission as an adult and a health reporter to seek out the sex ed he wished he’d received as a young person.

This cheeky documentary is full of fun and double entendres but is also a wealth of knowledge about sexual health and sexuality. From neuroscience labs to church pews, the film features provocative conversations with psychologists, sex researchers, educators, and spiritual leaders.

Alex is an earnest and endearing narrator, whose openness and vulnerability in the face of awkward questions and uncomfortable realizations creates opportunities for the audience to examine our own preconceived notions about sex.
