AS I AM explores the joys and challenges of navigating the unique experience of being Black and Queer. Coming out is just the beginning, at the intersections of sexual expression and race relations, self-worth is in a state of constant flux. Influenced by family, culture, religion, living against the colonial paradigm, self-determination and acceptance becomes the exhale of Black queer existence. This collection of films unapologetically shares stories of self reflection and fulfilment as the directors examine what it means to come into their own queer beings, reclaiming the right to shape our most authentic complex selves.
Followed by a pre-recorded Q&A with guest curator Mahlet Cuff, Ayo Tsalithaba, and Dr. Kwame McKenzie.
