About The Cinematheque

Bringing more than 25 years of experience to their practice, The Cinematheque’s team of knowledgeable filmmakers and educators regularly host interactive field trips at The Cinematheque, during which students watch and discuss films in their state-of-the-art theatre. Film is an interdisciplinary art, and analyzing film provides students with opportunities to build core competencies in many subject areas.

Watching films from the Vancouver Queer Film Festival will not only provide an engaging and accessible way of integrating Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) curriculum into the school year, but will also provide competencies in creative and critical thinking, social awareness and responsibility, and more. The Cinematheque previously collaborated with Out In Schools for the Reaching Out youth filmmaking program (2017-2019) and the Creative Outlets online filmmaking program and free resource (2021-2022), and both organizations are dedicated to promoting cinema as a tool of self-discovery and exploration.

Shorts: I Wear My Heart On My Sleeve + Gender Expression Workshop

Clothing can be a means of self-expression as well as a way to represent the communities we belong to; we dress up both to stand out and to fit in. This shorts program recommended for grade 8+ explores fashion, culture, personal style, and identity from multiple perspectives, demonstrating how clothing provides opportunities for creativity, acceptance, and social change.

Followed by a 90 minute Gender Expression workshop with Out In Schools, with supplies provided and activities for you to experiment with, explore, and create your unique gender expression! Bring clothes to modify or swap, and learn to modify your clothes into items that bring you joy. See full program details.

The Future Is Queer is for students and youth approximately ages 12 and up. The matinée screenings will be especially relevant to course material in Film Studies, Media Studies, Social Justice, Drama, and English. We also welcome GSA’s and Pride Societies to attend.

All youth programs at VQFF are curated with a young audience in mind and will additionally be rated by BC Consumer Protection.

Group bookings for youth and accompanying adults are free of charge on both days. Educators and administrators are invited to reserve group tickets now via our Group Booking Form

Individual youth can attend screenings on Friday, September 20, 2024 for free. Adults who are accompanying individual youth may book tickets at the Festival’s regular sliding scale prices ($7-$17 per ticket). Individual tickets for all VQFF programs will go on sale in mid-August.

Educators and administrators can reserve tickets now for screenings on Thursday, September 19 by filling out the Group Booking Form.

While we are not yet booking tickets for Friday, September 20, you may express interest in the screenings on this day in either the booking form or via email to boxoffice@outonscreen.com

The full Festival programme will be announced in mid-August, one month before the Festival! We will share highlights of all youth-friendly programs and they will also be easily searchable in our online programme.

We especially recommend the Troublemakers 8.0 (date TBA), an annual inter-generational filmmaking program by Reel Youth in which youth filmmakers make short documentaries about local 2SLGBTQIA+ elders. The final films will premiere at VQFF.
