BLACK AS U R is a powerful glimpse into the complexity and beauty of being Black and queer in the Black Lives Matter era. At the height of the pandemic, Black communities and allies took to the streets to demand an end to state-sanctioned violence against Black and Brown bodies. Days after the murder of George Floyd, a young trans woman, Iyanna Dior was brutally attacked in St. Paul, Minnesota. Filmmaker Micheal Rice explores the deadly impact of misogynoir and transphobia, shadowing the growing number of deaths of Black trans women and its implications in a system that persists injustice and violence against Black women. BLACK AS U R illuminates the role of queer people in both historical and modern Black liberation movements, and the histories of homophobia within Black communities.
